South West England Field Target Association vs Wales Field Target Association results:-
SWEFTA v WAFTA – Sunday 14th October 2012Lucky with the weather – and we won too!

Last Sunday saw South Dorset FTC’s hosting of the annual SWEFTA v WAFTA (Welsh Airgun And Field Target Association) Field Target competition. The competition location alternates each year between Wales and the SWEFTA region and this was the first time it was held at SDFTC.

With prior knowledge of WAFTA’s competency in despatching of 40mm kill zones, a few more 25mm and 12.7mm targets were introduced to the 40 target course, just to make it interesting…

Mind you, I don’t think we needed to have worried too much, as the demonic winds that linger in Bincombe Wood made their presence felt on the day, scattering the unsuspecting shooter’s pellets in all directions – except the one they had predicted!

The frosty, chilly start to the day was soon forgotten once Sheila’s Wagon was serving hot drinks and delicious bacon butties, and was a warm welcome to the many shooters who had travelled a good distance to take part.

The sun began to shine and competition got underway around 10am. WAFTA had the odds against them from the start, with their final team numbering only 8 competitors, so all of their scores would have to count. This was against a SWEFTA team of 25 shooters, from which the top 8 scores would count.

The wind did prove tricky, but overall there was some fine scores returned, in what was a very friendly, enjoyable day.

When all was done and counted, SWEFTA’s team were declared the winners, with an 8 point lead. The highest individual score of the day was won by WAFTA’s, Mark Shephard, with a stunning 37 points! Excellent shooting…

To celebrate the occasion, our very own club member Louise Heath aged 12, who also shot the competition, had kindly baked a deliciously rich chocolate cake, skilfully iced with the words ‘SWEFTA v WAFTA’. This was appreciatively received and enjoyed by all, and was the perfect way to conclude the prize giving and the day, well done Louise.

We all wished our Welsh counterparts farewell and SWEFTA looks forward to visiting them in 2013 for the next competition.

Make sure you visit the website gallery as there are some great photos of the day, courtesy of David Fowler.

A big thanks to all who took part in the competition, as well as those who helped organise and run the day.
